Custom iLASIK

iLASIK technology, an outpatient surgical procedure used to treat farsightedness, nearsightedness and astigmatism, is a proven and tested advance that has a long history of success. The procedure improves vision by permanently changing the shape of the cornea using a cool beam laser. Custom laser correction is based upon very precise measurements called wavescan. Wavescan measures light waves and compares them with an eye that needs no correction. This painless procedure identifies and measures small defects in a person’s vision that is twenty-five times more precise than standard methods doctors normally use to test for glasses or contact lenses. Any surgery is subject to risks and complications, and iLASIK is not for everyone. For more detailed information talk to your doctor.

iLASIK, IntraLase CustomVue LASIK

Dr. Richens has been performing Laser Vision Correction since 1999 with great results. In November 2008 she moved from creating the LASIK flap portion with a microkeratome (or blade) to creating the flap with a laser. The iFS Advanced Femtosecond Laser takes refractive surgery-and more Specifically, LASIK flap creation-to a whole new standard of speed and control. This technology provides a lower energy that may reduce tissue response and inflammation. This laser also has more control to create a more precise flap thickness and a beveled flap edge which promotes flap stability and positioning. You may be a candidate for iLASIK if you can’t see clearly without your glasses or contact lenses, even if you wear reading glasses only. If you are not a candidate for iLASIK you may be a candidate for the Visian ICL (Implantable contact lens) or a Clear Lens Replacement. Learn more at www.ilasik.com

Visian ICL

Dr. Sharon Richens is the only certified surgeon in Southern Utah performing this procedure. The Visian ICL is a lens that is placed behind the iris and in front of the natural lens. The procedure only takes about 20 minutes per eye. The lens implant is rolled into an injector, then inserted into the eye through an incision measuring 2.5 mm. Once inside the eye the lens opens up and Dr. Richens tucks the edges of the lens in place. This procedure was FDA approved in the United States in 2005 and Dr. Richens is the only surgeon in Southern Utah to perform this amazing procedure, (as of August 2010). FDA approval is for patients older than 21 who are nearsighted in moderate to severe ranges of -3.00 to -20.00 diopters. Many years before FDA approval, the Visian ICL was approved and marketed in many countries outside the United States, including Europe. Learn more at www.visianinfo.com

Clear Lens Replacement

A Clear Lens Replacement is a procedure where Dr. Richens would remove your natural lens and replace it with a Intra-Ocular Lens Implant. This is typically for patients that are older than 45 years old who would like to reduce their dependence on glasses or contact lenses. The reason you may choose this procedure over iLASIK or the Visian ICL is that the lens implants are multi-focal, providing better vision for distance, intermediate and near vision. There are two lens options and we can help you determine which would fit your lifestyle best.
