Dr. Sharon Richens, MD, FACS, is a board-certified ophthalmologist with advanced surgical training. She leads the team at Richens Eye Center, which has locations in St. George, Utah, and Mesquite, Nevada. Our board-certified ophthalmologists and skilled optometrists help patients find the right vision correction option, whether it’s iLASIK or EVO ICL.
What Is iLASIK?
iLASIK reshapes the cornea to correct your vision. At Richens Eye Center, both steps of the procedure (the corneal flap creation and the reshaping) are done with lasers. This reduces the risks associated with older blade-based LASIK techniques.
Most people experience improved vision quickly, sometimes within a day. However, people with very high prescriptions or corneal irregularities may not be ideal candidates.
What Is EVO ICL?
EVO ICL is an implantable lens placed between the iris and your natural lens to correct nearsightedness, with or without astigmatism. Unlike iLASIK, it doesn’t reshape the cornea or remove tissue, making it a good option for people with thin corneas or high prescriptions.
The lens is made of Collamer, a biocompatible material that includes UV protection. It’s invisible once in place, and you can’t feel it during normal activities. One advantage of EVO ICL is that it’s removable in case your needs change later.
Key Differences Between EVO ICL and iLASIK
While both iLASIK and EVO ICL are effective ways to correct vision, they work in very different ways. The right choice depends on your eye health, prescription, and personal preferences. Here’s a quick look at how the two compare:
- Procedure type: iLASIK reshapes the cornea; EVO ICL adds a lens
- Reversibility: ICL is removable; iLASIK is permanent
- Ideal for: ICL may suit those with high prescriptions or dry eyes
- Recovery: iLASIK typically has a faster visual recovery, but ICL healing is usually smooth
- UV protection: EVO ICL offers built-in UV filtering
