If you work around dangerous materials, whether as a hobby or for your job, you should know how important it is to protect your eyes. After all, it only takes a second for something to happen that you’ll have to live with (and regret) for the rest of your life. Read on for some tips for taking care of your eyes!

Eye protection tips

There is more to eye protection than just putting on a pair of goggles. There are other things you should know.

For instance, there are different kinds of eye protection, and one of these other types might suit you better depending on what you are doing. If you work with chemicals (even if only briefly), you should invest in eye protection that wraps around your head to cover the sides of your eyes, to protect your eyes from any splashing. You may even need a full face shield. If you are welding (again, even if you are working on a task that will only take a minute), you should not only wear a helmet, but also safety glasses or goggles underneath the helmet. And just wearing your regular glasses isn’t enough – safety glasses look like normal glasses but have strong, durable lenses and frames to offer real protection from flying debris.

You should also know that you shouldn’t wear your contact lenses if you are working with hazardous chemical fumes. However, contact lenses can make things a lot easier in other situations. They provide a much wider field of vision than glasses do, and they can make wearing eye protection a lot more comfortable – wearing goggles is much more comfortable when you don’t have to put them on over your regular glasses.

Only wear eye protection that fits you properly, and always check it over before you put it on, to make sure it isn’t scratched or dirty. If you do have an eye injury, get medical attention as soon as possible.

Another important tip for staying safe at work is to make sure your vision is sharp and you are seeing well. If it is time for an eye exam, call Richens Eye Center for an appointment. Call the office in St. George, UT, or Mesquite, NV, at (435) 986-2020 today!
