How to Make Your Recovery from Eyelid Surgery Easy

eyelid surgery Preparing for your eyelid surgery or blepharoplasty can help make your recovery problem-free. Whether you have eyelid surgery to correct your peripheral vision or to achieve the appearance you’ve always wanted, it’s important to take the proper steps needed before your procedure to ensure your eyes and skin can heal from surgery properly.

Let Your Support System Know You’ll Be Having Eyelid Surgery

Recovery from eyelid surgery takes most patients up to two weeks. One of the best things you can do to ensure a successful recovery is to establish a support system of loved ones who can help you after your surgery. From driving you home from your appointment to helping you get around, having a helping hand during your two weeks of healing can eliminate stress and strain for patients, allowing them to focus on physical healing.

Prepare a Gentle Skincare and Shower Routine

Being gentle with your face and the area surrounding your eyes after surgery is essential. During your healing period, you can wash your face, shampoo your hair, and shower. However, it’s important to avoid complete submersion of the eyelid area into water if possible. As a precautionary measure to prevent any damage, infection, or any other healing complications, invest in gentle face cleansers or baby shampoo as a safer alternative.

Follow Your Doctor’s Aftercare Guidelines

Each eyelid surgery procedure is customized to every patient’s needs and goals. The same goes for their recovery. Depending on your body and how you heal, Dr. Tarbet may recommend aftercare guidelines specifically for you. However, in general, it’s important to stick to a routine that does the following to promote a full recovery:

  • Use iced gauze pads on the treated area in the first 48 hours to minimize swelling
  • Keep your head elevated when lying down or sleeping to prevent swelling
  • Avoid high-intensity physical activity
  • Avoid prolonged sun exposure and tanning beds, as they can cause swelling
  • Wear SPF 30 or higher sunscreen on the face daily
